As has been widely touted in the media, NASA thinks they may have discovered evidence of flowing water in recent history (in the last 7 years).

Personally, I’m hoping it’s actually a martian oil-slick as we would have a refiner^Wcolony there within a year.

Also of note, Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter has photographed the Viking 1 & 2 craft which arrived on Mars 30 years ago.

It’s a shame we can’t get a closer look at the old landers just now as I’d be interested to see what has corroded, how fast it has corroded (if at all), how much wind/sand damage there is and what the martian youths have graffitid on them. Unfortunately we need either a long-range rover or an atmospheric flying probe for close inspection and those items are still on the drawing boards here on Earth.

Finally, a heads up for STS-116 which is scheduled to launch in the early hours of Friday (GMT) on a construction mission to the ISS.
