Today is the 50th anniversary of the British Egg Information Service

Fifty years ago, they ran television adverts featuring Tony Hancock with the slogan: “Go to work on an egg”. Essentially they were promoting that you should have an egg for breakfast to start your day in the best way possible.  The Egg Information Service wanted to re-run the ads on television to celebrate the anniversary.

The British Advertising Clearance Centre had different ideas.

They effectively banned the adverts from being re-shown on the premise that the ads do not promote a healthy and balanced diet. Well, in my opinion the television advertising from the major fast food outlets does even less to promote healthy eating in general and one advert from a department store/supermarket actually goes so far as to encourage you to gorge yourself on complete rubbish.

Of course, in the 1950s levels of obesity were low. Part of the reason may have been food scarcity and low intake but the ammount of calories needed for daily life was huge in comparison with the modern day. Having an egg to kick that day off would give you a fair 100kcal or so to be going on with.

In 2007 in the UK 43% of men and 34% of women are overweight. As I’ve said, if you ate a ‘varied diet’ as approved to be shown by the BACC on television you would probably find yourself in an early grave but what Britain really needs to do is get up off their big, fat, lardy backsides and excercise.

As for eggs, even fried they’re probably a damn sight better for you than most of the offle served up to you in ‘convenient packaging’.

You can watch the original adverts here:

Quick video of the US Army in Iraq modifying an Opel Vectra A in Iraq using their ’special tools’.

It seems they were having trouble getting their boot install ‘just right’.

…actually, it appears they were trying to destroy the vehicle’s payload of mortars by gunfire. ;)

I somehow stumbled across this video at Youtube while watching some D1 videos.

This is Greenpeace at the G8 Summit held earlier this month in Heiligendamm Germany.

Greenpeace apparently turn up in some fast RIBs on the sea-facing coast of the summit venue and go up against some equally fast RIBs of the German Police and a larger fast  police vessel resembling  a gun-boat.

The German police tactic appears to be ramming/swamping and the guys in the last Greenpeace boat gets another RIB on their heads after they surrender.

As far as I can tell there were no fatalities / serious injuries but it wasn’t for want of trying!

I hope whatever Greenpeace’s argument was this year that it was worth it for them.

These Swedish fellows decided to fly their 2m span radio control model aircraft through a very long road tunnel in Stockholme, the capital city of Sweden.

The challange was to do the impossible, fly a huge aerobatic RC-plane under Stockholm through a 3.9km long tunnel called Södra länken.

The plane is 80″ wide and weighs 13lb. The mighty electric motor provides 22lb of thrust and a topspeed closer to 120mph.

The aircraft is controlled (somewhat precariously) from the vehicle following behind.

This escapade was presumably highly illegal and surely enough, the ‘pilot’ hops out at the end with Ghost-Rider style black helmet on.

It now seems likely that Land Rover and Jaguar will be sold to private equity firms in the very near future.

The Solihull Land Rover plant which employs 5,900 people from around the West Midlands could be closed. Investors are expected to use the 308 acres of land to build “Executive Homes” [read: overpriced rabbit hutches] and net them around £450 million.

Land Rover production would move to Merseyside where the Freelander is already produced but the jobs at Solihull would probably be non-transferable for obvious reasons.

Ford, faced with £3.55bn in losses, has codenamed the British sale ‘Project Swift’, suggesting it wants a speedy conclusion.

Jaguar’s production would be concentrated at the Castle Bromwich factory but further job losses could be on the cards.

Those looking to buy a house in Salisbury should perhaps consider this lovely ‘converted coach-house’ [read: Decorated lock-up] which could be yours for a mere £235,000.

A unique opportunity to acquire this converted coach house within this prime city centre road.

Basically, it backs on to the A36

The property provides an individual layout with an impressive first floor open plan kitchen/living space. Other features include two bedrooms, bathroom, useful utility cupboard,

Well, seeing as it’s a converted lock-up, you’d expect it to make a good utility cupboard

This detached property…

Detached in the sense that the picture shows it to be built up to the adjacent house?

…needs to be viewed internally to fully to appreciate its style.

Although, I can tell you for free that it probably looks like a decorated garage with a staircase.

I’m not sure that we need much more evidence to show that firstly the UK Housing market is massively over-valued and that secondly, the lack of proper new builds and planning permission for such is having a detrimental effect on housing density.
