23 year old Sayed Pervez Kambaksh, a journalism student at Balkh University in Northern Afghanistan, had been sentenced to death for the crime of asking for a debate on women’s rights.

His crime was to download and distribute a report which criticized the treatment of women under Islamic law. He was tried, allegedly without legal representation, by a Sharia court and sentenced to death for blasphemy. The United Nations called upon Afghanistan’s leader Hamid Karzai to overturn the sentence in the interests of freedom of expression but the Afghan senate later confirmed the death penalty.

I an apparent about-face, the Afghan senate yesterday withdrew their confirmation of the death-penalty calling it a “technical mistake”. This does not reverse the judgement of the court in  question but it may make it easier for Hamid Karzai to apply pressure to secure Pervez’ release.

As with many religions in many countries, Islam has protection under the law in Afghanistan to avoid criticism or debate of the religion and it’s merits.
