Update 2:36am: Alternatively, according to the BGS, it was a 5.1, possibly 5.3 Update: Later revised back to a 5.2 in a BGS press-release. The BGS wesbite is here but go easy on clicking, they seem to be down under the load just now.

The thing is, as I can tell from various web forums, the quake was felt over pretty much the whole of England and some parts of Wales. Pardon me for being in awe, but that’s a lot of mass-in-motion ;)

Apparently, it was felt strongly in Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham. Unfortunately, some sheeple from distant parts of the country are already phoning their favorite TV stations in the customary state of feigned distress and the news outlets are gearing up for a “The Day The Earth Shook” style newsgasm or two. No doubt there’ll be a couple of comparisons to other far, far, larger earthquakes due to various newscaster’s failure to grasp that the Richter scale is logarithmic rather than linear.

It’s not readily apparent if there has been any damage or injuries but most if not all UK structures should withstand a magnitude 4.7 earthquake assuming they’re properly designed (although I can think of a conservatory or two which might have fallen down :P ).

  1. isnt it abit odd that the last earthquake was near enough one year ago, on april the 28th?

Must be a seasonal thing ;)

  3. This is the first tremor I’ve ever felt. I can understand why people might be a bit scared, lord knows I’ve got 3 house mates who think the apocalypse just kicked off, But all in all I thought it was pretty amazing. Are these “Quakes” Likely to increase in ocurance and magnitude or is it just a once in a while thing?

Apparently the expected occurrence of an Earthquake this size in the UK is about 1 every 10 years. They do seem to have some difficulty in predicting them for the UK so I suppose it’s possible that they come in more of a ‘flurry’.

A really big one (by UK standards) of 5.6 or more is due about every hundred years.

I was absolutely terrified - my life completely flashed before my eyes. I have an outstanding rugby refereeing career ahead of me and do hope that I can continue my life and group meetings as per usual. I do hope that everyones alright and not been as badly traumatised as I have. God Bless.

Just don’t tell the Rugby lads eh? ;)

  7. Living in a 3 floor terrace that’s full of cracks, I wouldn’t like them to increase in occurance, though I know it’s not something I can’t prevent.
(though I might have to start looking for a more structurally sound home ><)
For how much my room shook, I was quite surprised to see how far the epicenter was from Rhyl. This earthquake even managed to wake one of my friends up in Wrexham XD

    *:3

  8. I was on ventrilo talking to some friends and I heard rumbling from there end which blew my eardrums! I hope no one is injured in Hull, my uncle lives there.

  9. Yep, it woke both the dog and me in Derbyshire. Intriguing that BBC news 24 had only feeds from the US geological survey. Apparently they don’t have contact with the UK one, or any friends in Hull.

I suspect the USGS has a press officer on hand 24/7 whereas the BGS might need to drag theirs out of bed ;)

The BBC has a word from the BGS now suggesting this was a 5.1 http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/7266136.stm

  11. Given the size of the rocking here, I’d guess a 5.1 is more likely. But why no news from Hull?

  12. Melvin Byres says:

This is my second message on this blog - wow - how exciting was that earthquake…. I so so so wish I could experience it again; even my heart shook. Was anybody else absolutely terrified? I am currently sad on a sofa, legs curled up biting my nails waiting for the aftershock - the suspense is killing me.

  13. Incidentally, I think the biggest recorded was roughly a 6.1 in Essex in the 19th century, though a 6.4 is a possibility. It would be interesting to see how many buildings could survive that.

  14. I” in Hull!! Mann I thought it was paranormal - that was crazy shit! I was lent against the wall in my room texting when it happened, started screaming, crying, hyperventilating ( that looks like a bad spellling), then I was laughing and repeating that I could’nt believe I reacted the way I did hehe crazy way for me- although it was my first earthquake!
Sleeping with the door open for some reason even though I’ve seen the news hehe. :o)

  15. Melvin - sorry, no aftershock on one this small. Even the dog is now calm.

  16. But why no news from Hull?

I’d take a guess that Hull may not have a 24hr newsroom. I think BBC Look North’s offices are in Newcastle and Leeds.

I’m sure Hull is still standing - many sturdy Victorian structures IIRC. There may be communication issues of course, digital electronics seem so fragile compared with the mechanical telephone exchanges of yesteryear.

My friend in Birmingham actually thinks that the earthquake knocked out his cable internet connection.

  17. Um - perhaps your friend just omitted to pay his bill!

  18. Melvin Byres says:

OH MY GOD - it was actually 5.3 on the richter scale - i am absolutely flabergasted!

  19. Was anybody else absolutely terrified?

I was actually playing an online game at the time (QUAKE WARS) would you believe ;)

My immediate thought was, the chair is broken again…. but almost instantly I recognised it as an earthquake (I experienced the 2002 Dudley quake at close range). I backed of the keyboard for a moment or two and then got up to stand and feel for the tremor dying off but it stopped almost immediately. I played the match through and then made a post here thinking it was another ‘local’ earthquake.

I’m not allowed to be a big jessy about Earthquakes as some years ago my mother experienced an earthquake many times more powerful in Himachal Pradesh. I have to behave as expected: with a cool detachment and not worry about whether my supposition that my house is strong enough to survive a potential 5.6+ is correct or not hehe ;)

  20. Melvin - who said 5.3? If so, must have been off the coast somewhere: 5.3 in the centre would cause somewhat severe damage. The wonderful one (that nobody seems to know about) was in London in the 17th century. It demolished the west wing of St Paul’s Cathedral - but not many people know that: the accounts of the (later) plague and Great Fire were (perhaps) rather more important.

  21. it was actually 5.3 on the richter scale - i am absolutely flabergasted!

I’d take the figures with a pinch of salt from BGS until morning. Chances are, nobody has completed the work to check yet and the media will be jumping on any large number as fact whether it comes from conjecture or a pure slip of the tongue.

  22. I would guess on the Dogger Bank - there’s a fault line running under there.

  23. Keely says:

    I”m in Hull!!

Hi Keely, nice to know that Hull is still there and communicating :)

  24. Luckily my cottage has survived since the 16th century: I don’t expect it to fall down for a while and the nearest fault line runs through Birmingham (where as I recollect they had a 4.2 back in the ’80s).

  25. It’s amazing how many 16th century structures still stand.

They habitually built the walls wider at the base than the top back then. I’m lead to believe this is idea for withstanding earthquakes.

  26. Nay, it was just the way of building. Old dry-stone walls are the same. It’s just more stable.

  27. Oh I know they didn’t have earthquakes in mind when they built them that way, it’s just coincidental that it’s a good structural shape in an earthquake.

In the vein of “they don’t build em like they used to”, I’m slightly concerned about the ‘new-build’ flats they throw up these days. They’re essentially prefab concrete sections with bricks resting against them. I could image one of the brick facades falling away.

  28. Im in bloody Hull..UGH!!!!!!!!!! that was a nightmare! I had no clue what was going on either…thought my roof was caving in on me or there was a train coming on the railway lines at the back of my house..the vibrations got worse an worse..rumbling…shaking…things falling off the cupboards I was stunned, sat in a chair on my computer, the screen was all over shaking as well like crazy haha I can laugh now, but at the time..I was scared to death wondered what the hell it was arghh!

  29. That’s exactly what happened in Kobe. The earthquake was supposed to happen in Tokyo, where buildings were well reinforced. It didn’t.

  30. I’m in Hull, when i woke up with the shaking, woke the wife up and asked her if she felt the room shaking, she asked me if there was a big lorry going past the house from tesco’s. i told her it was an earthquake, she told me it wasn’t!!!!! women are always right, anyway i’ve just put on the BBC news and she’s just kissed my ass

  31. I would suggest looking for the answer by considering the use by European and U.S goverments of HAARP technology.

Google HAARP and be shocked. excuse the pun

  32. This is the 2nd earth tremor in Hull in 2 years. Last nigth’s literally shook the house to the right for about 2-3 seconds. Strongest one I’ve been witness to. Patterns would indicate a large one is brewing.

  33. I’m in Hull, I’m a woman and yes Xavier we are always right :-P .My boyfriend and I woke up and couldn’t work out what was going on, It was ages before I could get back to sleep, I was that worried that it was the start of something bigger I put our daughter in our bed with us.

  34. I would suggest looking for the answer by considering the use by European and U.S goverments of HAARP technology.

…because it’s not like earthquakes have been happening naturally throughout all of recorded history? ;)

  35. Melvin Byres says:

Aaaaictually…. the BGS have now revised it back to a 5.2 :P

A delusion is commonly defined as a fixed false belief - think this sums you up nicely mate ha

  39. :o) Melvin I agree with you there , Hey Delusion I guess nato and U.S DONT spray Chemtrails neither and and teslar technology is just a figment of imagination, I also guess everything is just a natural disaster then not man induced .

I also guess the New World Order ( sorry> New Global order ) doesnt exist , and the black royaly are just comic strip characters.

I also imagine being Delusional that all wars are faught for freedom and not industrial barons to earn a few fast quid.

I also imagine that the war in Iraq is about freeing people and their belifs and not about CAPPING the oil so Opec can monopolise the price of a barrel of oil.

I also sappose we need fossil fuels even though the germans in ww2 ran most stuff at end on synthetics and non fossil oil .

Oh well spose i should do a few more happy pills and get delusional when a hidden agenda is mentioned like
    H.A.A.R.P

and what it can and may be able to do >

  40. hey ur guys do u know such person named Emily Smith ?
