French President, Nicholas Sarkozy has suggested that the EU should impose a cap on the VAT added to fuel so that it remains proportionate to the price.

Both France and the United Kingdom have now seen protests at the price of road fuels which has increased as much as 30% in the last year. There have also been major protests by French fishermen due to the EU removal of their fuel subsidy which effectively saw fishing boats paying twice as much for fuel overnight.
