Royal Navy Swiftsure class hunter-killer submarine HMS Superb has been damaged after hitting rocks while on operations in the Red Sea.
Superb was apparently submerged at the time of the collision and remained watertight but was forced to surface after hitting a pinnacle of rock about 80 miles south of the Suez canal. The vessel is reported to have suffered damage to it’s sonar system and is therefore unable to operate submerged.
None of the 112 were injured and the nuclear propulsion system remained secure. According to most sources, Superb would be armed with conventional Spearfish torpedoes and Harpoon missiles.
The MOD is currently evaluting options for safe return of the submarine to port.
