MEPs back EU Telecom Package Amendments
Posted by: delusional in News, Politics, Tech NewsMEPs have voted through the amendments to the EU Telecom Package which could see the EU Comission allowing corporations to spy on private EU citizens without any recourse to judicial procedure.
The BBC quotes MEP Malcolm Harbour as saying the amended bill was “about improving users’ rights”. Unfortunately, it appears this is the user’s right to be spied upon or cut off altogether by their ISPs at the behest of third party corporations which only has to say they are infringing some IP (no apparent burden of proof).
This is the legislation that could allow for a ‘3 strikes’ rule and arbitrary ‘deep-packet’ inspection by third party corporations.
The really stupid thing is that MEPs already voted against legislation rather like this in May this year but now, with it tacked on to another bill, they have voted for it.
Final voting on the full bill for the Telecoms Package ‘Telecom Packet’ is in September.
