US President George W Bush has stated that the Pentagon will coordinate the delivery of humanitarian aid in Georgia using US miltary forces.
The move is being called a political shot across the bows but I’m calling it politically dangerous.
As far as I can find out, the US aims to use Naval and Air force delivery to get aid in but this indicates there will be two superpowers operating their hardware in close proximity. I can see many scenarios where an incident could cause a catastrophic escalation between the superpowers. Just imagine that one US air transport is ‘accidentally’ shot down by Russian forces; the implications are terrifying.
We have to now hope that there are no ‘accidents’ and no mistakes.
Update: This looks even worse when an apparent change in Russian nuclear doctrine is taken into account:
